Indy Bike Trails

Indianapolis might not always get the same outdoor hype as coastal cities, but if you know where to look, it’s quietly one of the best places in the Midwest to bike. With an interconnected network of greenways, rail-trails, and urban paths, you can ride through neighborhoods, parks, and downtown without ever feeling stuck in traffic.

If Indianapolis has a “main artery” for biking, this is it. The Monon Trail stretches roughly 25–29 miles through central Indiana, connecting downtown Indianapolis to suburbs like Carmel, Westfield, and even up to Sheridan.

What makes it special isn’t just the distance—it’s the experience. You’ll pass coffee shops in Broad Ripple, quiet residential stretches, and long uninterrupted paths perfect for zoning out and riding. It’s just as useful for commuting as it is for weekend miles.

The Indianapolis Cultural Trail is where biking meets city life. This 8–10 mile urban loop connects six cultural districts and some of the city’s most vibrant destinations.

Think public art, landscaped paths, and easy access to places like Mass Ave, Fountain Square, and White River State Park. It’s less about speed and more about exploring—perfect for a casual ride or showing off the city to someone new.

What really elevates Indy is how these trails connect. The Monon links to routes like the Fall Creek Greenway, White River Trail, and Central Canal Towpath, creating a network that spans large parts of the city.

Newer additions like the Pogue’s Run Trail are continuing to fill in the gaps, making it easier than ever to plan longer, uninterrupted rides across different neighborhoods.

Most trails are paved, relatively flat, and beginner-friendly, which means you can ride as casually or as seriously as you want.

And because many of these paths were built on former rail corridors, they’re designed for distance. You can hop on for a quick 20-minute ride—or stay out for hours without retracing your route.

If you’re thinking about getting into biking—or just want a low-effort way to explore the city—start with the Monon, loop through the Cultural Trail, and let yourself wander from there. Indy’s trail system rewards curiosity more than planning.
